Crafting or Crippling?

I got a "smart" phone awhile back.
It was awesome.
The internet was literally at my fingertips.

In two shakes of a lamb's tail I could acquire recipe details pertaining to
edible greenery for Christmas cookie plates.

Thanks to Pinterest (and Ally Egass) I could mastermind the perfect holiday favors...

...right down to their clustered basket presentation.

I even discovered the most amazing process to track anything and everything in your life...

It was quite the rabbit hole I traveled down in my obsession to transfer every paper snippet in sight...

...onto the pages of a new moleskin.

By the time I finally resurfaced it was to discover  I was
sitting in the same old chair,
looking at the same old walls,
and feeling very...
very...
nothing.

Luckily some wise words of wake up by Joshua Becker came my way
and culminated with this quote.

"The first step in crafting the life you want
is to get rid of everything you don’t."

This was huge.
In so many ways.

Sadly, my first instinct was to make a list of everything I didn't want.
A bullet list.
In my bullet journal.

But...
somewhere in Becker's post
I recalled a bit about getting up and living.
So instead I turned off the phone,
closed the journal,
and picked up a brush.

I'd lived with those "Dewy Twig" green walls for fifteen years.
Another day with them was something I truly didn't want.

No more peering through the looking glass,
wishing for a life lived in a Pinterest board.
I'll make my own.

Culling and curating by instinct rather than instruction...

....to create a home...

...and craft a life.

  2. Hi Natalie Jo! Very nice and so true. I was just thinking that in my next home, (which I hope to have by summer) I am going to tell my husband I want the walls white when things need painted (and depending on the house, if they need painting right away). Andrea

Had a peek around your neck of the woods and have to tell you how delighted I was to see you have your cooking blog back up. What yummy inspiration, oodles of thanks for feeding us such fun! All best wishes for you in the new year ahead, natalie jo

  3. Hello Natalie Jo, My daughter has returned home in hopes of crafting her own new life tomorrow we will paint a second coat of white to her walls. She wants bright, simple, uncluttered. I think it's the perfect choice for a fresh start. I have enjoyed your blog for awhile but rather shy about posting comments but I want to thank you for your generous tutorial for your piccalilli pincushion. My sister with MS recently took up sewing doll clothes and as I am a quilter/crafter she asked if I would make her a pincushion. I had been wanting to make a Lily for a long time so I made it for her Christmas present. She adores it,of course I gave her Lily her own mini pin cushion (just like yours) it came out so cute I could barely let her go. But I have my own in the works now the holidays wrapped up. I would send a photo but I,m not tech savvy. Sorry this comment is so long , I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you talent and kindness. Happy new year. Cathy

You are more than welcome for any of the tidbits I have been able to share with you here but now it is me that must send my gratitude for your words as they have truly brought a bright spot to my new year ahead. 1. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you in the sun room department and even go one better and hope yours comes with heat. Ours is truly a 3-season enjoyment so come this time of year it is a bit nippy to say the least!

    1. I find inspiration tends to find me along similar paths when I least expect it...isn't it delightful when that happens!!!

  6. I just love this post! What a wonderful and quote and totally where I am right now. Your dining room looks lovely. It is funny because I just threw out some old table lines I hated and bought new ones. I love how you have the runner on top of the tablecloth. I might have to try that. I'm glad I had time to catch up on your blog this morning.

    1. Truth be told I found the inspiration to layer the runner on top of the cloth over "Posy Gets Cozy" way. I am so in love with her warm, cozy table settings...be sure to have a peek at her site if you haven't already. And as far as table linens go, I know for a fact my stash could use a good go through!

  7. That is so funny. I love Alicia Paulson and her blog is one of my favorite's. I've made all the little animal kits, one sampler, and even copied her daughter's Christmas stocking.
